GoPro, the San Mateo‑based action‑camera maker, announced it will cut roughly 145 jobs worldwide—about 23 % of its workforce—by the end of the second quarter of 2026. The layoffs were detailed in an SEC filing that cited a restructuring plan approved by the board on April 7, aimed at reducing operating costs and improving operating leverage. The company expects the restructuring expenses to range between $11.5 million and $15 million, covering one‑time severance and healthcare benefits for the affected employees.

The cuts come after a steep decline in GoPro’s sales, which fell nearly 37 % year‑over‑year in the November 2025 quarter. Despite the downturn, CEO Nicolas Woodman highlighted recent product launches—a MAX2 360 camera, LIT HERO camera, and Fluid Pro AI gimbal—alongside new software offerings, expressing confidence that revenue growth and profitability would resume in late 2025 and continue into 2026. Reactions on Reddit varied, with some users criticizing Woodman’s leadership while others suggested the layoffs could be a strategic move that might boost the stock if upcoming products perform well.

The GoPro layoff is part of a broader wave of reductions affecting Bay Area tech firms. Earlier in the month, Oracle disclosed plans to eliminate around 700 positions by June, adding to thousands of cuts announced across the industry. This trend underscores the ongoing challenges faced by technology companies as they grapple with declining sales, cost‑cutting measures, and the need to restructure in a shifting market environment.

More pain is hitting the Bay Area tech sector as GoPro, the San Mateo‑based maker of action cameras, announced a sweeping reduction of its workforce. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company disclosed that it will cut roughly 145 jobs worldwide – about 23 % of its headcount – by the end of the second quarter of 2026. The layoffs will affect employees across all regions and are part of a restructuring plan approved by GoPro’s board on April 7.

The restructuring plan is expected to cost GoPro between $11.5 million and $15 million, covering one‑time severance and health‑care benefits for the affected staff. The move comes after a November 2025 report showed GoPro’s sales had fallen nearly 37 % year‑over‑year. Despite the decline, CEO Nicolas Woodman tried to paint a brighter picture, citing the launch of three new hardware products (the MAX2 360 camera, LIT HERO camera and Fluid Pro AI gimbal) and several software offerings, and projecting a return to revenue growth and profitability beginning in Q4 2025 and continuing into 2026.

Reactions to the cuts have been mixed on social media. Reddit users expressed both sympathy for those losing jobs and criticism of Woodman’s leadership, while some noted that the layoffs might be a strategic move aligned with a broader trend of cost‑cutting across Bay Area firms. The announcement follows a larger wave of reductions in the region, most recently the revelation that Oracle will lay off roughly 700 employees by June, adding to thousands of job losses that have already been reported across the tech industry.
