Rheinfels Castle is located above St. Goar (Rhine-Hunsrück district, Rhineland-Palatinate) and was founded in 1245. After its expansion into a fortress, it was the largest fortification in the Middle Rhine Valley, but was destroyed by French revolutionary troops at the end of the 18th century.
