I had a fun time spending a lot of time helping a friend out with their game at #SanJapan, doing karaoke till 6am with another friend.
It was filled with people and I wish I took more photos of cosplayers but honestly I really was just enjoying the moment over the weekend.

I had so much fun at #SanJapan this year! It was a very interesting con even though this is the year I probably did the least amount of shopping or panel watching.

Just realized that #SanJapan 2023 is the first anime #convention I've really attended since the start of the pandemic. In both 2021 and 2022, I popped in just long enough to make a circuit around Artist Alley and throw some money at artists, but I didn't stick around any longer than necessary; I did go to #Anthrocon earlier this year, but of course, furry cons are different beasts (heh).

After the pandemic started and #conventions in general stopped for a couple years, I started feeling like maybe it was time for me to be semi-retired from anime cons. I was wondering if going to SJ this year would change my opinion on that, and... not really, actually. The panels are all things I've seen before, the dealer's room is all stuff that I can buy directly from the manufacturer for half the price, most of the guests are nobody I've ever heard of. Artist Alley is still my favorite place and I can spend hours in there, but I hate having to sift through all the Genshin Impact junk to find anything else. I know that every con is going to have The Popular Thing that everybody focuses on, but PNG slot machines specifically rub me the wrong way.

I also saw some pretty cool cosplays but, again, it failed to rejuvenate my own desire to make my own. I feel like I'm probably content with attending San Japan when it comes around and maybe occasionally some other nearby con if there's a guest I want to see, but my days of going to 6+ big cons a year are probably over.

Maybe I'll go to Alamo City Furry Invasion next month to see if it's got similar vibes to AnthroCon, though, which I honestly had a lot more fun at than SJ despite not knowing anybody there. It looks... tiny. That's not necessarily bad, but tiny conventions tend to either be great or awful, and I dunno what to expect.

Also, a wag of my finger to SJ for having a literally nonexistent COVID-19 policy. No vaccine card or rapid test checks, not even a "Masks recommended" sign. There were a few people wearing masks, but I was definitely the only person with an N99.
