The owner of our accommodation told us not to continue on the hiking path, but to stay on the road because of a landslide...
Soon after we left the village behind us, we saw the entrance of that hiking path, that we were told not to take. The path was not blocked, or had a warning sign. But, to be on the safe side, we kept walking on the road, and we were happy we did so!

To help you imagine the situation: the hiking path was a really super thin single trail on one side of a wild river, while the gravel road, we walked on, was on the other side of this river. It was super rainy, the road was muddy and very slippery - really not fun to hike!

From our side, we could visibly follow the hiking path and saw not only one landslide, but several. We saw how other hikers went in an extremely dangerous way over these slides. It's not that simple to say "it's their life." If something happens with tourists, locals would come immediately to help, and bring themselves into a dangerous situation.
Later, we met someone who had taken the dangerous path and told us that it was an adrenaline-loaded day for them, but luckilly all of them reached the village. Phew!

But, to tell you also something nice 😄, the lush green around us, the avocado and maracuja plantations, were really beautiful to look at! 💚

That afternoon, we reached the village Lucmabamba, where we asked for a room at 'Lia B&B by Freddy and Esther.' A real gem of an accommodation! Late afternoon, all rooms were full. Together with the other guests we sat in the garden, chatting and chilling (the sun was out, shining warmly) when Freddy asked us to come with him. He showed us his coffee plantation, the coca plants, banana, and other fruit trees, and explained everything about the process of coffee in a very funny way. In the end, we got a delicious cup of coffee from his own beans that we roasted all together over a fire. Just amazing!

Back in Cusco, we prepared for the next adventure: the 4-day trek over the Salkantay Pass to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo 🤩
This multi-day hike with the visit to Machu Picchu as the final destination was a big point on my bucket list 😍

We arrived at the starting point of the hiking trail with a collectivo bus and a taxi. Anyone who traveled a bit, knows that this is an adventure in itself... 😅

We reached the hostel in Soraypampa at 3,900m, deep in the valley between snow-covered mountain peaks, in the afternoon. After check-in and some discussion to clarify if we could get gluten-free dinner and breakfast, we set off for our acclimatizing hike to the incredibly beautiful Humantay Lake at 4,200m.
We were lucky, as the sun came out shortly before disappearing behind a mountain, to light up the turquoise, green-blue, ice-cold lake 🩵

The next morning, we had to start early, just after sunrise, to be sure to reach the next accomodation by daytime.
The trek to the highest point, the Salkantay Pass at 4,630m, was so beautiful, but also extremely exhausting. Even though we were quite used to the altitude because we had stayed two months in Urubamba at 2,872m and places around 3,500m, it was challenging to breathe and move forward/upwards. We were so happy when we reached the Pass 🏔️

On the other side, downwards, the landscape, nature, and climate changed quite quickly. It was visible that we were approaching the high jungle of Peru.
After this first day, with 20km in our legs, we were super tired but at the same time very proud and happy. In Collpapampa we found a simple hotel room (not one of the very fancy hanging glass-cabins, like in picture nr. 20 visible 😉) and went to bed as early as possible 😊

Ok, time to start sharing some photos of my #PeruHike with #NomadTribe. We spent the first night at Soraypampa before hiking up to the #Salkantay Pass at around 4,500 meters. The altitude made it rough, and some of the group sent their bags ahead on horses.
For a less crowded, equally stunning experience, the Salkantay Trek delivers.
You’ll hike through snow-capped peaks, cloud forests, and remote Andean villages before arriving at Machu Picchu.
A powerful alternative for nature lovers.
