6 Salamanders in Los Angeles That Prove the City Is Wilder Than You Think

Most people picture highways, palm trees, and sprawling neighborhoods when they think of Los Angeles — not secretive amphibians slipping through leaf litter after a winter rain. Yet salamanders in Los Angeles are a genuine, fascinating reality, quietly thriving in urban gardens, oak-shaded canyons, and protected mountain wilderness alike. 9 Salamanders Found in Central Texas: Species, Habitats, and Conservation Status

Central Texas is home to one of the most remarkable concentrations of salamander diversity in North America, and most people drive right over their habitats without knowing it. Tucked beneath the limestone karst of the Edwards Aquifer, scattered across spring-fed pools, and hidden in the crevices of the Texas Hill Country, these small amphibians have evolved in near-total isolation for millions of years. New video out!
Another for the people who, for reasons I cannot comprehend, are not fans of snakes. Instead, lizards and...a very, very special endemic salamander...are the headliners again! Many unique critters that call the southern stretches of New Mexico home, and over these two days quite a bit was seen. Some very cool wildflowers as well.

@animalculum very fascinating that not only certain insects can be #activeinwinter temperatures, but even #salamanders.

In the snow, these #salamanders get supercool https://www.npr.org/2025/12/24/nx-s1-5649922/snow-ice-blue-spotted-salamanders-supercool preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.03.28.645960v1.full

"blue-spotted salamanders can be seen walking on snow, but it was thought that this happened when temperatures had warmed up a bit... now, the researchers had a thermal camera with them... some salamanders had temperatures below freezing... they apparently have some kind of natural anti-freeze that allows them to become supercooled... letting them start their breeding as early as possible"

For the last 20 years, Dominican nuns in a Mexican monastery have cared for the largest known captive population of the critically endangered achoque salamander. Now scientists from Chester Zoo in the U.K. are collaborating with the sisters and Mexican conservationists to test a microchipping method that they hope will help them monitor the species’ dwindling wild population, reports Mongabay’s Liz Kimbrough.
