Chapter 9
After a cover showing a disoriented Roe, we shift perspective to a montage of our escaped dragon and Penelope. Or was that all Roe's dream? Hey, it's Leila's Boyfriend that was mentioned early on and we haven't seen until now! He doesn't seem to know why Leila is upset. Does he not know magic exists? Leila has to prepare her case to the priestess council, and I love Roe's snark. Ah, Ben heard Roe's nightmare from the beginning of the chapter. I still love Roe's snark. Uh oh Leila brought up Roe's dad. Lucas enters and there's more family fighting OH SHIT DRAGON IS BACK! So he wants Roe to take out the lance, but the OSM took the key Roe needs. Leila's circle arrives at the shop, including Bobbie! Wow, I love the effect of their speech bubbles wrapping around Robin's neck as she blurs out their words. It really hammers home how it feels to be depressed in the middle of a crowd of people. Scene change to a giant tower. The OSM all look miserable, but the top room in their tower is gorgeous. Now this establishes we've had a time skip of a month and a half. Looks like we're going to see more of Officer Bhasin. End of chapter!
Chapter 10
Roe looks even more exacerbated on this cover page. Lucas has apartment trouble, and his roommates think his job is "not real retail." Apparently they don't understand how working retail works, magic or not. David is back! I like all these background characters. David asks Lucas out to lunch. Roe's dad is still annoying Leila on the phone. They have a cursed vase, and Leila is really agitated.
Back to Roe: the backgrounds of the city are gorgeous. We haven't heard anything about Roe's job since the first scene, so now we get a bit more. Roe and Pat whine about their shitty manager Jerry, and dang they make Lucas' complaints about Leila look trite. Oops, Jerry noticed Roe's hat! Also I giggled at Roe telling Pat nothing notable happened when Pat was on leave. I guess Pat doesn't know. So Roe works in some sort of home-goods or dish store. Uh oh, Officer Bree Bhasin comes in while Roe is working pretending to be a customer. That's a sure way to get a retail worker in trouble. Or it would be for anyone without Roe's snark powers. I love Roe. Bree tries to recruit Roe into the magic cops. Oh my Goddess Roe Snark is perfect. A missing person flyer causes Roe to have flashbacks. Roe goes to make tea and more flashbacks! So we meet Roe's brother Dylan as they go through their dad's stuff, and drama with Maddie. Roe's Dad calls and she agrees to meet him (still in the flashback).
End of chapter, but this time there is bonus content showing the art process.
These were the final two completed chapters, and they gave me more of an emotional whirlwind than the previous episodes. In Roe's case, it's incredible how she goes from super confident and snarky when dealing with a magic cop to depressed in her flashback when she sees a flyer.
Now, before starting the final chapter, I'm going to look at the Kickstarter bonus art. There's no text to any of these: it just shows all the main cast in nice poses. Oh and in one of them they all have queer pride flags. I love how some of the characters are sharing flags.
Chapter 11:
Okay, now it's time for the final chapter, which was never compiled into an ebook and never even finished. I'll read it off of the website.
Roe is still at work. Jasper the dragon shows up, and we learn his name is Jasper. Reading on the website also gives me the author commentary, which mentions Jasper is finally joining the "main cast," with only 10 pages to go in the series. Jasper got Penny's phone back from Liang! Jasper angrily demands Roe's help removing the lance, but Roe still doesn't have the key. Jerry arrives, but, surprise! Roe would rather leave on "sick leave" with Jasper than stay and deal with a frustrating customer. So there is a "Hunting for Dummies" book, but only in Italian, and Google Translate can't handle it. Where is Roe taking Jasper? Scene change to the witch circle at the shop, with David and Lucas looking quite annoyed. Ah, Roe's dad is still calling Leila. The priestesses still won't help with the mysterious black sludge. And we still have no idea what it is. We get a lot of arguing between these two, with Leila seemingly inconsistent on whether the priestesses would "understand" her position. Leila really trusts David...and that's the end.
More than two years later, I still love Roe, Lucas, Robin, Penelope, Leila, and David. The first page of the series launched nearly 10 years ago, but it holds up well. I wish we got more time with the cast, and I wish we got to see a resolution, but I'm still glad I read this series as it released, and I am still glad I reread it now.
