Well, I made it through Saint Tail. In all my years of watching anime, I have never been as disappointed in a series as I was with this one. All my prior disappointments seem like glowing successes in comparison. Even Kikuko Inoue wasn’t able to save Saint Tail for me. And that’s all I’ll say about that…

Meanwhile, World Witches Take Off! was a lot of fun. I haven’t watched anything Strike/Brave Witches in a couple of years, but since the Take Off! series is just comedic side-stories that exist on their own away from the main series, it wasn’t a big deal that I had to jog my memory about the characters and main story again. If the characters were reduced to caricatures of themselves again, it didn’t bother me this time. It was fun to watch, and that’s what matters at the end of the day.

So next week, it’s back to my anime shelf to pick my next pair of shows to watch!

After 40 episodes, I've finally seen the first sign of anything resembling story or character development in Saint Tail.

The series is 43 episodes long.

The best gymnast in the world can't do enough backflips to make anything in Saint Tail make sense. There isn't enough steel cable in the world to suspend my disbelief enough to rationalize the lack of logic in any of the characters' motivations...

As much as I want to just ragequit the series at this point, I'm going to see it through to the end. I'm well past halfway, so I might as well find out how it all ends...

My reward for getting through Saint Tail will be to rewatch something I like very much and haven't seen in a long time... haven't decided what yet, though.

Two episodes into my Sketchbook rewatch, and I'm quickly reminded of why it's one of my favorite slice-of-life shows. (Though it only took about ten minutes into the first episode to remember.) Quiet and spacy lead girl, fun supporting cast, art students, comedy that hits just right, relaxed pacing, and cats. There's a non-zero chance I may raise my rating of it from a 9 to a perfect 10 by the time I finish.

Glad I chose Sketchbook as a rewatch right now too; it's the perfect salve after each frustrating episode of Saint Tail. I'm past the halfway point in that series, and I've just about given up hope on anything changing as far as characters or plot. I'm still going to finish watching it, but I haven't been this disappointed in an anime series in a long time.

Hoping for a new story arc or something soon in Saint Tail, because as it stands as I near the halfway point, this series is looking like a rare miss when it comes to my intuition on which shows I decide to add to my collection. Unless something changes soon, it's a series I'll watch once and never again...

I'm usually pretty good at blindly adding shows to my collection (which is my preferred approach); after more than two decades of watching anime now, I know what I like and how to find it while avoiding spoilers and without diving too deep into plot descriptions. But rarely, a series still falls short even when it pops up on my radar.

That said, the preview for the next episode indicates a Ghostbusters parody of some kind, so that might be fun.

Well the character I can't stand in Saint Tail actually seems to be getting a little less annoying, now that another character has been introduced who can put him in his place. I hope this trend continues.

And after a slow start, Nobunaga The Fool is really starting to pick up as I get near the halfway point, so I'm really getting into it now. And I kind of want Leonardo da Vinci's tarot deck. I don't know how to use the cards, but I like the designs on the ones shown in the series so far.

In all my years of watching anime, there are very few characters I've run across who I actively dislike. L.A. from El Cazador de la Bruja being the one who has the dubious honor of being offender number one in that category for me.

But now, a mere six episodes into Saint Tail, Asuka Jr. is giving L.A. a run for his money as anime character I actively dislike the most. A character from a magical girl show! That wasn't on my anime fan bingo card...

I really want to like Saint Tail, but at this early stage there are a couple of roadblocks keeping me from fully enjoying it. First is that the forces trying to capture her are a bunch of misguided blockheads. I mean, come on... Saint Tail is helping you catch criminals you clearly aren't able to yourselves! Why are you trying to capture her?! Second is that Saint Tail's primary would-be foil is super annoying. At this point, he's a loud and unlikeable know-it-all, so of course he's the one Saint Tail has a crush on.

I really hope that the detectives get a clue and that the one character gets humbled sometime soon, because otherwise it's a cute show far.
