Attributed to Michelangelo is the bust of the Savior Christ in the basilica of Saint Agnes outside the walls.

A ten-year study involving wills, letters, diaries, historical books and travel journals, inventory records, and fraternal deeds, which led to the “reattribution” of Michelangelo’s Christ the Savior bust, long preserved in the basilica of Saint Agnes on Via Nomentana in Rome. Researcher Valentina Salerno conducted the research, and during a press conference within the complex of the Order of the Regular Lateran Canons, she presented her study titled “Michelangelo’s Last Days.”

“I essentially started this research without considering Vasari,” Salerno recounts, “because Michelangelo spent his last years in Rome, while Vasari was not in the city. The sculptor had been described as a grumpy man who destroyed everything in the last phase of his life, but it turned out he wasn’t like that.”

For centuries, it was believed that the artist had destroyed hundreds of sketches, drawings, and sculptures housed in his home; however, the sources found suggest the opposite: the works were not eliminated, but safeguarded. According to the reconstruction, drawings, studies, and marbles passed from hand to hand within a small circle of trusted students and friends.

“We hope that this discovery, among others, will activate research into the lost part of Michelangelo’s last works,” explains Michele Rak, a professor at the University of Siena – “We believe there are others, which would enrich a part of the Church’s and Rome’s heritage.”
