First voyage by a new, purpose designed, sailing cargo ship completed -- with teething problems, admittedly.

But this is the only way we're going to be able to continue intercontinental trade into the second half of this century, so I'm glad to see it.

Climate solution: Sails make a comeback in shipping, to dent its huge carbon footprint

Seafaring pioneers are spearheading a comeback for wind power in the shipping industry, to dent its huge carbon emissions. The international merchant fleet of more than 100,000 ships that transports most of the world's trade is also responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Mariners pushing for wind power say investors used to view them as something of a joke. But as they engineer the return of sail-powered cargo ships, they are having the last laugh. Sailors don’t claim that wind propulsion is going to rule the waves as it did for centuries. But they see a future for sailing on some cargo routes, driven by shipping’s need to decarbonize.

This one has more details. One of the cool things is that it can be fitted to current vessels easily. I hope it's not just more greenwashing though.

Giant kites could pull cargo ships across the ocean – and slash their carbon emissions

French company Airseas has developed the Seawing, a kite to help propel cargo ships, which it says could cut their carbon emissions by an average of 20%.

It doesn't give any figures as to how much fuel the ships save, but kinda cool regardless.

For good or ill the British empire was delivered by sail power. A quarter of the planet was seized on wings of wind.

And this was when we could barely manage to claw a few degrees upwind.

Sailing's way easier (and safer) now. Our grasp of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, material science competency and other needful skills are vastly better than when sail power delivered a successful alien invasion.

So yeah, "there's potential." We only need remember it.
