In archaeology, strontium isotope analysis has provided interesting data when comparing the remains of different individuals in the same cemetery. While differences in strontium isotopes in bones and teeth can be suggestive of origins in different physical environments and cultural milieux, social stratification and social custom (such as fosterage) could also account for differences, as well as significant local variation in climate, soil, and bedrock. Often I have read reports that seem to treat strontium isotope analysis as a definitive marker of local versus exotic origin. It may be SUGGESTIVE of such cultural differences, but there may also be other explanations for why a particular individual who lived in that community ended up with a different set of strontium isotopes in the bones or teeth.
