Signal Lost (Integrity): The Signal App is More than the Sum of its Protocols

Signal is a secure messaging app offering end-to-end security for pairwise and group communications. It has tens of millions of users, and has heavily influenced the design of other secure messaging apps (including WhatsApp). Signal has been heavily analysed and, as a result, is rightly regarded as setting the "gold standard" for messaging apps by the scientific community. We present two practical attacks that break the integrity properties of Signal in its advertised threat model. Each attack arises from different features of Signal that are poorly documented and have eluded formal security analyses. The first attack, affecting Android and Desktop, arises from Signal's introduction of identities based on usernames (instead of phone numbers) in early 2022. We show that the protocol for resolving identities based on usernames and on phone numbers introduced a vulnerability that allows a malicious server to inject arbitrary messages into one-to-one conversations under specific circumstances. The injection causes a user-visible alert about a change of safety numbers, but if the users compare their safety numbers, they will be correct. The second attack is even more severe. It arises from Signal's Sealed Sender (SSS) feature, designed to allow sender identities to be hidden. We show that a combination of two errors in the SSS implementation in Android allows a malicious server to inject arbitrary messages into both one-to-one and group conversations. The errors relate to missing key checks and the loss of context when cryptographic processing is distributed across multiple software components. The attack is undetectable by users and can be mounted at any time, without any preconditions. As far as we can tell, the vulnerability has been present since the introduction of SSS in 2018. We disclosed both attacks to Signal. The vulnerabilities were promptly acknowledged and patched: the first vulnerability was fixed two days after disclosure, while the second one was patched after eight days. Beyond presenting these devastating attacks on Signal's end-to-end security guarantees, we discuss more broadly what can be learned about the challenges of deploying new security features in complex software projects.

De Groene: ‘Derks heeft kunstige spagaat gemaakt’

Vandaag precies drie weken geleden verscheen mijn biografie Reinbert de Leeuw: mens of melodie bij uitgeverij Leporello in Amstelveen en deze mag zich verheugen in een uitstekende pers en dito verkoopcijfers. Gisteren was ik een uur lang te gast bij journaliste Petra Possel in het programma Kunststof op Radio 1. Zij zei het boek ‘van kaft tot kaft’ gelezen te hebben, een luisteraar mailde dat hij het boek ‘prachtig’ vond en dat het hem voortdurend naar de platenkast deed snellen om de beschreven muziek hernieuwd te beluisteren. Een musicus die veel met De Leeuw gewerkt had, mailde dat deze nu een keer veeleisend is en dat ik me niet te veel moet aantrekken van zijn oekazes tegen mijn boek.

Gisteren verscheen ook een twee pagina’s tellende bespreking in De Groene Amsterdammer van Bas van Putten. Hij schrijft onder andere: ‘Derks heeft een kunstige spagaat gemaakt. De schaduwzijden van een monomaan en explosief karakter worden niet verdoezeld, de harde kern van zijn verdiensten blijft onaangetast. […] Een van de sterkste punten van het boek, al denkt De Leeuw daar anders over, is dat het gaat over waar het volgens hem over moet gaan: muziek. […] Uitvoerig belicht Derks zijn identificatie met componisten waar De Leeuw, zelf ongelovig maar gevoelig voor het absolute, zich met maniakale onverbiddelijkheid voor heeft ingezet.’

Op woensdag 23 april ben ik te gast in een door  De Groene Amsterdammer en de Universiteit van Amsterdam georganiseerd debat over de hobbels van biografische onderzoek in Spui25. Ook Nop Maas, biograaf van Gerard Reve en Max Pam, criticaster van de biografie van W.F. Hermans zijn uitgenodigd. De avond wordt gepresenteerd door Margreet Fogteloo en Marja Pruis spreekt een column uit.

Morgen heb ik een interview met Guus Urlings van dagblad De Limburger/Het Limburgs Dagblad en op zaterdag 12 ben ik om 13.00 uur te gast in het Cultuurcafé van L1, dat live wordt uitgezonden vanuit de Maaspoort in Venlo.

A.s. dinsdag 8 april spreek ik van 15.00-16.00 uur over mijn boek met Robert van Altena in het programma Springvossen op AmsterdamFM. En met ingang van vandaag ben ik lid van Schrijver School Samenleving, een organisatie die door heel Nederland lezingen van auteurs organiseert.

En last but not least: vanavond signeer ik mijn biografie bij het concert van het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in De Vrijdag van Vredenburg, dat live wordt uitgezonden op Radio 4. Ik sprak hiervoor met de sopraan Meagan Miller (liederen van Richard Strauss) en met de orkestpianist Stephan Kiefer (over Ravel en Debussy).

Still currently maxed out on my vacation time, so it's #PayDayOff #Today.

Spent basically all day redoing my old #Thinkpad X1c. Swapped the RAM from my old xeon laptop to go from 32 -> 64 GB, added a second m2 nvme drive to double usable storage to a TB.

Currently doing a #guix reconfigure after a new install, so that'll take about forever. Then it's time to see about doing the #SSS setup for it.

My thinking is to have the home directory live on the second drive.

I also thought about running #QubesOS on the thing, but I just dunno on that one yet.
