Following #SSMIS impredictable data provision, in order to ensure our users with a reliable service, we are now basing our Sea Ice Index on AMSR-2-based Sea Ice Concentration product.

Release of sea ice index product version v2.3 | OSI SAF

We are now releasing version 2.3 of the OSI SAF Sea Ice Index product. As previously announced (service messages #3328 and #3329), the Sea Ice Index product (OSI-420) will in the future be calculated from the AMSR-2-based Sea Ice Concentration product (OSI-438) instead of the SSMIS-based concentration product (OSI-430-a). Note that sea-ice index values up until July 31, 2025, are identical in versions 2.2 and 2.3. Only index values from August 1, 2025, and onward will be affected by this data input change.

#SSMIS data-end grows close.

Our #SeaIce team has been busy this summer to ensure product continuity.

Our Sea Ice Index will be updated from v2.2 (SSMIS based) to v2.3 ( #AMSR2 based) from Friday 01/08/2025 on, but access to it will remain unchanged, ensuring a straightforward transition.

Radio geeks reveal how to access crucial hurricane data after US Department of Defense cut it off

: Hams for the win: Amateur-built decoder taps SSMIS satellite data amid NOAA cutoff

The Register

The Defense Department will still maintain the satellite program will cease sharing the imagery with NOAA and NASA.

CNN

🚧 The US #DMPS notified us yesterday that the #SSMIS data would still be distributed for another month, and be extended to (no later than) 31/07/2025. We still strongly invite our SSMIS #SeaIce only products users to switch to our #AMSR-2 based products.

Turning off the vital data stream from a perfectly good healthy satellite is just mind boggling. And I'm supposed to still be on leave FFS #SSMIS
Loss of #SSMIS satellite as warned by @osi-saf.eumetsat.int will presumably also affect the #Greenland today melt maps over on NSIDC - I think AMSR2 melt maps exist for that but not sure where Perhaps I should write that blog post I was talking about earlier 🤔 osi-saf.eumetsat.int/community/st...

While I started on some vacations in #France, the #SeaIce teams at @osi_saf work hard to minimise the impact of the sudden loss of US #SSMIS data for our users. We got the news yesterday that the data flux will stop already on Monday June 30th!
