In an interview, the head of Amnesty International's Security Lab discusses his detective work on the "Predator Files." As part of the project, he and his team traced and analyzed dangerous smartphone spyware and infrastructure used in ongoing attacks.
OTTAWA - As wildfires forced the evacuation of several Northwest Territory communities and approach Yellowknife, the federal government should preemptively deploy all means necessary to help contain the fires and facilitate evacuations, the Green Party of Canada said today. Reports of Yellowknifers being asked to pay over a $1000 to fly out of the city and of the RCMP telling its non essential staff and relatives to evacuate are most concerning. All those who wish to leave Yellowknife should immediately be assisted by the government, including the most vulnerable, the elderly and those who cannot afford to fly commercially or do not wish to take the risk to drive out of town. Β« It is critical that all available federal resources be mobilized to save lives before it becomes too late. Winds can change quickly and evacuating a city is a tricky, lengthy exercise, Β» said Elizabeth May, Green Party of Canada leader.
OTTAWA - In a move designed to fool Canadians and appease their Big Oil friends, the NDP-backed Liberal government announced today that its Β« Clean Electricity Regulations Β» will designate the production of electricity from fossil fuels like gas and diesel as Β« clean electricity, Β» if it meets certain criteria. Canadians know that a 100% renewable electricity grid is possible and viable in this country. Wind and solar power are now the cheapest forms of electricity generation, and Canada has a solid base of hydroelectric generation to draw on. Yet, todayβs move indicates once again that the NDP-backed Liberal government will do all it can to prolong the delusional carbon-based economy that is choking our communities and killing the planet.
OTTAWA - Today, the Liberal government presented its new look. The Green Party of Canada would like to thank the departing ministers for their service and congratulate the new appointees. However, despite the appearance of a new beginning, this government is poised to continue in the same direction at a time when the problems facing Canadians warrant foundational changes to our economy, our politics and our federation. "Just like Pierre Poilièvre taking off his glasses, Justin Trudeau's cabinet reshuffle has more to do with cosmetics than politics," said Deputy Leader Jonathan Pedneault. « The NDP-backed Liberal government may present some new faces, but this government is poised to remain insufficient on the climate emergency, the housing crisis and the rising cost of living as long as they refuse to treat these issues as the systemic, whole-of-government challenges that they are."
Last Monday, the Liberal government unveiled its new guidelines for ending "inefficient fossil fuel subsidies". According to the Green Party, this is an insufficient measure that does not adequately respond to the urgency of the moment. In a press release issued on April 17, 2023 by Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault, Canada pledged to eliminate all fossil fuel subsidies "by the end of 2023". This plan represents a major step back from the original commitment. We can also add that this plan only applies to future subsidies. Grants already awarded will continue to be paid. Minister Guilbault did not want to give a precise amount of subsidies that will not be paid out thanks to this plan. It is therefore rather difficult to assess the effectiveness of this measure.
