@crazyeddie @Quasit #SMStirling lays out what can happen (including cannibalism) in the #Emberverse series. In Stirling's story, the guns don't work, so in reality, it could be way worse than what Stirling describes.

@wesdym "In a city not prepared to be fortress..." Well, if we had self-sustaining communities, this *might* not be as much as a problem. Community safety will have to be a priority -- but communities will have to defend themselves.

#Emberverse #SMStirling

Believe it or not, @Wyatt_H_Knott , I actually researched cannibalism after reading #SMStirling's #Emberverse series. Pretty much only the skin and fatty bits are safe for consumption. Everything else could be toxic -- even after a a slow roasting. Especially the brains. DON'T EAT BRAINS! Any brains!!!
"Personal note: Tell me about the Stirling cycle!"
Are your referring to #SMStirling, @delightdelightrevolution ?
So, in one of my SciFi scenarios (titled, "State of the Art,") something like #KesslerSyndrome happens -- throwing us back a few decades (or more)... (And that was written in the 1980s, before #SMStirling). This change was to take place between 2016 and 2030... At the time, I pondered that it #CouldBeAliens, but now I realize that we're bringing it onto ourselves!
So, an interesting model for a post-collapse world is #SMStirling's #Emberverse series. In his vision, the various factions splinter off and form their own city-states -- two of the main ones in Oregon being Pagan-types, and the other ChristoFascists. I could totally see this happening in the US and other places... Unfortunately...
@0xabad1dea I love finding written notes in an old book. The one exception? When I find "curse words" crossed out in a book. A copy of #SMStirling's "Dies The Fire" was edited by some sort of self-appointed #christofascist censor. Apparently, they didn't want other library patrons to be offended?!!
So. Our little rural neighborhood is starting to feel like something out of an #SMStirling novel. There's a bunch of us who are #Woke / #Pagan / #Buddhist / #NativeAmerican in the area, but there's also #Trumpers / #MAGA types interspersed here as well. Can we all work together in the face of #ClimateChange and disasters? So far, we've all coalesced when needed (yes, even the Trumpers). But will we pull together to keep each other alive in the long run? Only time will tell...
@whknott True. The same in #SMStirling's books as well. And I even I saw a future where humanity (at least in the US) was divided between #TreeHugging #Pagan types and #ChristoFascists. And that was before #OctaviaButler -- in the 1980s! It was titled "State of the Art" because civilization comes to a grinding halt at a certain point of our 'development'. In "State of The Art" and my other semi-prescient book of the events leading up to it ("The Kosmos"), it was an extraterrestrial civilization that kept us in our place -- to prevent us from destroying the biosphere and spreading the disease of capitalism and colonialism to other worlds.
And actually, after reading about the cannibalism in #SMStirling's #DiesTheFire books, it seems the only thing safe to eat on a human is the skin (and yes, I looked it up). @saltphoenix @LukefromDC
