Magnus Lindberg's Viola Concerto is perhaps the worst piece of music I have ever had to sit through. I used to view Christopher Rouse's Bassoon concerto as the pinnacle of modern aural assaults but it is far surpassed by this composition. Whereas Rouse demonstrates his contempt for the Bassoon by giving the performer the opportunity to display the worst characteristics of the instrument, Lindberg demonstrates his contempt for the audience by forcing them to endure a cacophonous string of notes produced using an array of unconventional techniques without any semblance of thematic, melodic, or tonal structure. I may never recover.
