Ex numero tre del Sisde negli anni più violenti della guerra di mafia a Palermo, è stato al centro di una vicenda giudiziaria controversa che ha diviso l'opinione pubblica in innocentisti e colpevolisti e che ha portato prima a una condanna a 10 anni per concorso esterno in associazione mafiosa (Contrada scontò 8 anni della pena) e successivamente alla revoca della stessa condanna dopo un pronunciamento della Corte europea dei diritti umani (Cedu) e a un risarcimento per l'ex poliziotto.
