In “The Author & Her Story” by Jason Jägel, the viewer is invited to join a colorful cast of characters from around the globe. The scene is set for conversation, a bite to eat, a costume change, and activities to pass the time. By way of the artist’s imagination, the airport and air travel are transformed into a theatrical production where interpersonal connections are center stage, and individual journeys may cross paths and intersect with others.

"When Natalya Burd was in her last year in high school, she took a train ride with her father from their home in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to Moscow, Russia. There, the artist would compete for a scholarship to attend a university level art school. Over the course of their 2,000-mile, four-day journey, Burd remembers seeing varied landscapes whiz by in cinematic fashion—from the sculpted mountain ranges of her homeland to the vast forests of Russia and the dusty roadsides along the way. That journey would have a major impact on Burd and her artistic practice for years to come. “So much more than this” is an example of a work inspired by this journey. “So much more than this” by #NatalyaBurd is online at: https://bit.ly/3i8vEI9" This was posted to our Instagram account on August 11, 2020 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729355147/

Lomas Garza is known for her portrayal of popular customs and events, from tamale-making to community fiestas. The metal cutout was based on a paper cutout that was photographed, digitized, and cut with a high-pressure jet stream of water.

"#Onthisday in 1940, Vito Acconci was born in New York City’s Bronx borough. Acconci began his artistic career as a poet and came to national prominence in the early 1970s as an artist working in performance and conceptual art. Acconci’s work is often characterized by a direct involvement of the viewer as an element in the artwork. Along this corridor, sculptural beams of light splay out from the recessed lighting in the ceiling above and transverse the length of the corridor, like rays of light. At the end of each “light beam” is a functional telephone. "In Crystal Liu’s universe, elements of the natural world serve as actors in a grand narrative of emotional and personal origins. In “Underground, "Stuck in Between"” geological strata are represented by distinctly colored sections of marbleized paper, which are separated by an underground river. Leafless trees and a subterranean golden planet suggest both existential strife and hope for the future.
