At the 20th Conference of the Parties (CoP20) to CITES in Samarkand, governments took a decisive step forward. Beyond species listings and trade debates, they adopted new indicators to align the CITES Strategic Vision 2021–2030 with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
"One-third (34%) of assessed global fish stocks were overfished in 2017. However, 60% were maximally fished, and 6% were underfished.

Big questions remain. The numbers add up to trouble for the oceans, wildlife, and us, but scientists are struggling to understand how. The numbers are staggering: There are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic debris in the ocean. Of that mass, 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibers per square kilometer litter the deep sea.

Have you ever wondered how much garbage and rubbish there is on Earth? When disposing of their daily trash, most people do not give any further thought to where it goes and what happens to it. But a greater insight into waste could provide us with a different attitude towards a variety of issues, ranging from our consumption patterns to the environmental footprint we leave behind.
