Lost Bones #2 (Not Worth Losing an Ear)

A Single Mastodon Tooth Introduces Me to a Surprising City Historical Museum

Minnesota Lost Bones

It’s #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🍃🦣🦥🐴 Back up 95 million years from last Friday’s #lostBones #bison skull cap - here are some Cretaceous leaf fossils found along the Cottonwood River while working with staff from the Science Museum of Minnesota. 🐪🦬🐟

These fossils were found within a patchy broken stratum of Cretaceous-age sandstone and clay.

It’s #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦥🐃 🐘 🐴🐪🐟🍃There are no documented Pleistocene-age horse specimens in Minnesota. The small size of this m3 tooth has me hopeful. It's about 25mm in length across the crown.

Found by a friend on a river gravel bar it will be donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota for further study.

It’s #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦣🐪🦥🦫🐴🍃 100 million years older than last Friday’s #bison skull, here are some Cretaceous age leaf fossils found on the same river drainage this week.

Sediments in southern Minnesota include Western Interior Seaway Cenomanian shale, siltstone, and limestone which have been ground over by multiple glacial events 🧊

The specimens have been donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Missing #Mammoth! 🦣🐪🦥🦬🦫 The New Ulm, MN mammoth tusk is missing! If you are wondering where it went – it’s back at the Science Museum of Minnesota where it is being fitted for a new display case!

The Brown County Historical Society is working with the museum’s exhibit services team to create a case that will keep the tusk safe and stable for generations to come. 🦣

Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦬🍃🦣🐪🦥 Here is a beefy Bison bison humerus found last fall by a friend of mine in Southern Minnesota. It was found eroding out of the side of a small tributary about 4 feet below the soil surface – just downhill from a tee box on a local golf course. ⛳

It has since been donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota for further study.

It's #Minnesota #MammothMonday. 🦣🦷 More Southern Minnesota proboscideans! - see my previous #MammothMonday posts. Here's a partial tooth found in 2019 by a friend. It was stuck in the muddy river bottom along a cut bank. Surprisingly not fully tumbled apart - the rest of the animal could be close! Donated to the #sciencemuseumofmn. 🦣🦥🐴🐪🦬🍃
