Hungary, 1975. I am reminded somewhat of Ena Sharples, a rather sharp-tongued character in the early days of Coronation Street.

Hungary, 1976. Maybe you could caption this photo, "Dance like nobody's watching", but I don't think it needs any words. It speaks for itself.

Hungary, 1968. Another early example of Sándor Kereki's work. I am sure they are both having fun but it all looks a bit serious to me. The name on the swing, Évike is a diminutive of the Hungarian version of Eve.

Hungary, 1976. Wikipedia describes Karl Marx's theory of alienation as "the separation and estrangement of people from their work, their wider world, their human nature, and their selves". While he was talking about capitalist societies, I can't help thinking this photo of a cloakroom attendant in Communist Hungary is a perfect illustration of the alienation he was describing.

Budapest, 1975. Three men shovelling coal. I love the various angles of their arms and the shovels in this photo. To me they portrait the energy, the sense of movement involved in such hard physical work.

Budapest, 1977. The phone call. Another great example of street photography by Sándor Kereki.

Budapest, 1978. Sándor Kereki was only 26 when he captured this scene in Budapest, but he had been photographing the city for ten years by then. There is a maturity about this photo, the angular, urban landscape of old Budapest, offset by the single male, walking alone, and the women animately talking together.

Budapest, 1977. Middle age and old age - we never really think it will happen to us.

Budapest, 1968. Thanks to @lilakgillsbhoy 's comment on my last Fortepan post, I did some research on the photographer Sándor Kereki - and I'm fascinated. From age 16 to his early 30s (1968-1980), he documented Hungarian street life with a wonderful eye for ordinary moments. Self-taught, he captured regular people just living their lives in Socialist Hungary. There is a humanity about his photos, precisely because he concentrated on ordinary people.

Most of his work was unseen until he donated his negatives to Fortepan in 2021. Definitely want to feature more of his photographs. [I have also posted some links about Kereki below.]
