Innovative discovery: plastics that decompose autonomously on command.

Plastic pollution represents a growing global environmental crisis that requires attention. More than 90% of the plastic produced ends up polluting our environment, damaging ecosystems and compromising human health. The linear “take-make-dispose” production model strongly contrasts with the circularity of natural systems. To address this problem, chemists at Rutgers University in the United States have developed an innovative technology capable of modifying plastic so that it degrades into molecular components after a certain period of time or in response to signals such as sunlight.

This innovation allows the robustness of plastic to be maintained, making it suitable for use and subsequently enables an automatic decomposition to facilitate proper disposal or reuse. Negotiations for a global treaty on plastics are stalled, but if a final agreement were reached that holds producers accountable, this could incentivize investments in plastic self-destruction technologies, despite the higher costs compared to current production techniques.
