The snakes are no longer hungry and are living better.

AGI - Snakes can remain months without eating thanks to a radical evolutionary transformation: the loss of the gene that produces the ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite in most vertebrates. This is what emerges from a study led by researcher Rui Pinto of CIIMAR - Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research and the University of Porto, published in the journal Royal Society Open Biology.

The research shows that over the course of evolution, snakes have lost the gene responsible for producing ghrelin, a fundamental hormone for regulating hunger and energy metabolism in other vertebrates. This genetic loss would have led to a profound reorganization of physiology, allowing animals to store and use energy extremely efficiently. According to the authors, this adaptability explains how many snakes can survive long periods of fasting, a crucial characteristic in environments where the availability of prey is irregular.

Alternative Regulation Mechanisms

“This study demonstrates that evolution can produce radical adaptations not only through new genes, but also through the loss of existing functions,” explains Pinto, the first author of the research. The work suggests that after the loss of ghrelin, snakes have developed alternative mechanisms to regulate appetite and metabolism, becoming extremely efficient in managing energy reserves.

Implications for Biology and Medicine

According to Filipe Castro, head of the Animal Genetics and Evolution group at CIIMAR, the discovery strengthens a key concept in evolutionary biology: losing a gene can be as important as acquiring a new one. Understanding these natural mechanisms could also have implications for medicine, offering new perspectives for the study of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders.

The judge has asked Rui to stand for the final part of her statement. #RuiPinto #FootballLeaks
She said the four year sentence is suspended, and she also levels about 20,000 euros in fines. #RuiPinto #FootballLeaks
She is now reading the sentencing. Two years to Anibal Pinto, two years to Rui Pinto for the extortion charges. The combined sentencing on the other charges, adds up to four years of prison for Rui Pinto for the full slate of charges. Because he has collaborated with the court on other cases, they are combining the sentences. #RuiPinto #FootballLeaks
The court finds that the lawyer Anibal Pinto was breaking the lawyer's code of conduct and did engage in extortion. #RuiPinto #FootballLeaks

The court also thinks he shouldn't have whistleblower protection because of the amount of information he had access to and the comparatively little amount of information he released to the public. They also comment this doesn't typically relate to hacking and to typical whistleblowing cases. #FootballLeaks #RuiPinto
