The Largest Ice Shelf in Antarctica Is Behaving Oddly

The activity of an ice stream has caused the Ross Ice Shelf to suddenly displace. In Antarctica, massive glaciers are constantly shifting. Ice streams, which act like conveyor belts, are the pathways of accelerated movement that transport the majority of the ice and sediment debris from these exten

A rapid shift in ocean currents could imperil the world's largest ice shelf

Roughly the size of Spain, the Ross Ice Shelf stabilizes major glaciers along Antarctica’s coast — and is at risk of retreating, a new study finds.

Largest ice shelf in Antarctica lurches forward once or twice each day

In Antarctica, heavy glaciers are always on the move. Conveyor belts of ice, known as ice streams, are the corridors of faster flow that carry most of the vast glaciers' ice and sediment debris out toward the ocean.

last views of the #RossIceShelf - now we head along the catchily named Edward VII Land coast towards Cape Colbeck. In search of meltwater coming around from the hot glaciers further east of here. #climate #OceanHeatContent

have to say I enjoy some of the bad weather pix more than the classic tourista shots... blowing snow and low sunlight... this was about midnight...

as we continue along the front of the #RossIceShelf (still... been going for days...and 2 more to go) we occasionally come across strange slots in the ice... a look from above shows that these are the ends of rifts that will eventually calve big #icebergs #climate - checkout https://www.polarview.aq/antarctic

At today's #Tipaccs @OceanIceEU policy meeting, on #Antarctica and #TippingPoints, @nicojourd made a similar point to mine: the #RossIceShelf is the same size as the #NorthSea, predicting #iceShelf melt rates at the grounding line from an ocean point is like predicting ocean temperatures in Denmark with observations from the Atlantic. Attached: 1 image I often say that Antarctica is really big - and one of the reasons that it's quite hard to work out what is going on is the sheer size as well as lack of observations. We would not expect the same weather and climate across the US, and #Antarctica is almost 1.5 times bigger than the USA... ht https://www.thetruesize.com/
