THE Scottish Greens have challenged the SNP to come clean with voters in Aberdeen South and declare a position on the Rosebank oil field.The Westminster government’s decision on whether to grant a licence to Norwegian-owned Equinor to exploit the field to the west of Shetland is thought to be imminent after the earlier grant of a licence was overturned for failing to take into account lifetime emissions generated by the burning of the estimated 240 million barrels of oil and gas in the field.

Not only would the development of the Rosebank oil field in the North Sea be a climate disaster, one of its principal developers is owned by Israeli oil company, Delek, which fuels the occupation forces, profits from illegal West Bank colonialism and funds genocide

"On a sunny morning in June 2024, almost five years after Finch began her legal challenge, the decision came. The climate impact of burning coal, oil and gas must be taken into account when deciding whether to approve projects, wherever that burning takes place, the court ruled.
It was a small change in interpretation of the Town and Country Planning Act, but the effect was momentous. Permission for the Cumbria coalmine was quashed by the high court. The government spent a year rewriting guidance for the offshore oil and gas industry, pulling support from #Jackdaw and #Rosebank, which were then ruled unlawful.
The Finch ruling has been one of the most groundbreaking environmental cases of the century. But it is already under threat."

"Senior figures in the North Sea industry expect the fields to be given the go-ahead within the coming weeks, and claim they could begin producing fossil fuels by the end of the year. This outcome would be likely to provoke an outcry from green groups which have campaigned against the fields for years.
One industry source suggested that the go-ahead may come after the upcoming local elections in May, to avoid creating a dividing line between Labour and the Green party which has become increasingly popular among leftwing voters."
