A bit of a context for everyone outside Romania who might surely be outside the loop regarding the latest events: Recently, an AI generated singer called Lolita Cercel became quite popular in Romania and (I no longer use Spotify to confirm, but I'm pretty sure about it), is pretty much topping the charts. The style used by the "artist" is supposed to be inspired from the gypsy music (like manele, lăutărească etc.), but the sound of it is extremely generic, pop-ish and apart from a few well-chosen words, there's virtually nothing that could inspire you a link with these roots. Also, just like any "respectful" AI "artist", it already released a gazillion songs only this month, on its Instagram and on YouTube.
Now, I remember that when I was living with my parents, we used to joke at the end of each Saturday that we had such a rough day, we washed so many clothes (the irony here being that it was not them who were washing these clothes by hand, it was the washing machine doing all the hard work - something that one of us was always pointing out after). That recurrent joke always cracked us up.
Similarly, I see now that there are all sorts of "artists" trying to find a place for the AI generated "art". Lolita Cercel, the latest example of it that I mentioned previously, constitutes the most recent example - where the "artist" tries to "use the technology for the specific purpose of bringing back the human naturalness, imperfection and warmth" (sic). Fantastic! So you're telling me that this overly generic slop that you generated using 2-3 prompts is supposed to be something natural and human? For real? Not to mention the artist's first name (Lolita) is the name of the famous character of Vladimir Nabokov and Cercel (earring) is quite common among the Roma people. Some Roma activists pointed out that the creator is trying to appropriate the Roma culture in a way that doesn't include an actual ethnic.
These are valid critics, but, leaving this aside, I'd also like to point out to anyone doing such "art" - be it imagining pictures that were never taken using Midjourney or publishing such low-effort music on Spotify or even videos of all sorts (obviously created by AI) - that you guys, whatever you're doing, you're not doing that yourselves. It's the machine that's doing it.
And I hope that you're happy now that because of that machine, a stick of RAM costs as much as two jumbo jets and that a lot of communities in the #US - yes, that US that is now battling the corps of a crazy fascist dictator these days - have now less access to water and their power bills went up like crazy. All so these data centers powering your "artists" like Lolita Cercel and whatever name you might come up with can help you release songs one after another.
