My son paid his first visit to London's National Gallery earlier today. He told me how much he liked the paintings by Velasquez, particularly "The Immaculate Conception"; he was struck by the unidealized naturalism of the Virgin's features.
I couldn't bring myself to ask him if he had seen the Rokeby Venus. My guess is that the damage inflicted on the glass by the Just Stop Oil protesters has not yet been repaired.
I posted a little while ago about how annoying I found this Just Stop Oil action and suggested that it was probably counterproductive as far as changing British public opinion is concerned.
On further reflection, I recognized that I was more than annoyed. I was upset and saddened by the readiness of "progressive" activists to destroy a major work of art held in trust not just for the citizens of the UK but for everyone. This act of vandalism is symptomatic of one of the most unattractive aspects of the British left, a sanctimonious philistinism noted by Matthew Arnold back in the 1860's as widespread amongst the British middle classes. The roots of this "progressive" philistinism could probably be traced back further, to the iconoclasm of Protestant zealots and early modern republican theorists inveighing against the corrupting power of luxury.
I strongly support decarbonization, moving from private to public transport, egalitarian redistributions of wealth and power, and extensive socialization of the economy - but the politics of the left should not entail or seem to entail a Taliban like assault on shared art, history, and pleasures both public and private.
(In case you're wondering, I don't think the 1914 slashing of the Rokeby Venus by suffragette and future fascist Mary Richardson is anything to celebrate either.)
