Major Escalation: Israel Strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon
Israel launched a series of pre-emptive strikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah’s military capabilities. According to Israeli military sources, these airstrikes destroyed thousands of rocket launchers belonging to the Iran-backed group. The strikes were in response to a large-scale attack that Hezbollah had been preparing, which included the launch of 320 rockets and drones into Israel. Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) acted quickly to neutralize this threat, aiming to prevent further escalation.
Hezbollah, along with its ally Amal, reported the loss of three fighters. However, they declared the operation’s success by hitting multiple Israeli military facilities, marking what they called the “first phase” of their response. This marks a significant uptick in violence after ten months of tension along the Israel-Lebanon border, triggered by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Lebanon’s health ministry reported over 560 deaths since October, most of them Hezbollah fighters. On the Israeli side, 26 civilians and 23 soldiers have lost their lives. The conflict has also displaced nearly 200,000 people across both nations.
Hezbollah’s Response
Hezbollah retaliated with a barrage of rockets, claiming they targeted 11 Israeli military sites. Video footage showed multiple explosions as Israel’s Iron Dome intercepted many of these rockets. However, some managed to hit targets, causing damage but no reported casualties.
The situation is dire, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that this is just the beginning of a larger conflict. Despite the escalating violence, he stressed that Israel does not seek a full-scale war but will defend itself if necessary.
International Reactions
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, although limited in his ability to control Hezbollah, called for international help to stop the violence. He emphasized the need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. The United States is also pushing for a ceasefire, seeing it as crucial to de-escalating the broader regional conflict.
Efforts are ongoing to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza, which could potentially ease tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border. High-level meetings involving the CIA, Mossad, and other international leaders are currently underway to find a solution.
