Rock Ptarmigan looking for something to eat during our two-week ski tour to Pältsan in February 2026. I have never seen so many in one place at a time as there were in this valley. They are also more rare in Finland. They were surprisingly tame as well and let us get quite close to them. Maybe it is because they are more used to people in this area, as Pältsan is a quite popular spot for hikes all year around.

Running or rather flying away. These Rock Ptarmigans were part of a flock that flew right above us, scared by a Golden Eagle. I do not know if Golden Eagles really hunt Rock Ptarmigans, but if I were one of them, I would try to get away too. Picture from the February 2026 ski tour to Pältsan.

On the foot of the Pältsän mountain range. We got lost in thick mist on our way to Pältsästugan, a seasonally manned wilderness hut, and ended up on the slopes of Lássávárri instead. It turned out to be a lucky mistake, as the spot was beautiful and we spent two nights there enjoying the view, scouting the area, and photographing rock ptarmigans, which were everywhere.
