Got my hands on a #rock64 by #Pine64 - it's been fun playing around with an #sbc for the first time. #armbian works great, but I can't get #FreeBSD to output anything through hdmi, even though ssh and vnc works as expected.

Waiting for my uart adapter to arrive, I'll see if there is anything relevant coming up during boot. Worst case scenario, I still can use it as a server with ssh, but I'm still set on finding a cheap device for an #ARM desktop bsd setup.

my nano pi R2S-Plus is here but I stuck with FriendlyWRT. I need help to make my router boot FreeBSD ARM from SD card instead from internal eMMC. #freebsd #nanopi #arm64 #rock64

Yay! New toy has arrived. Now to brush off my NetBSD skills and try to turn this into a file server.

#Rock64 #RaspberryPi
Yay, #rock64 #hdmi is fine again. #armbian

So

I took a course this week on doing a Raspberry Pi program for work. I liked it, and it got me more interested in my own potential projects. Though this has led me to several questions.

First, I'd like to make a #NextCloud server. I thought I might use a #Rock64 instead of a #RaspberryPi 4 as I like #Pine64. But there isn't a ton of documentation? At least not like RP. Does anyone have a link to a good tutorial for a neophyte?

The next thing I thought about was a #PieHole. an RP Zero 2 W is suggested as it's cheap. Is there a way to connect via ethernet with one of these, or do I have to rely on wifi?

Lastly, I thought about setting up a #Sharkey #Mastodon or whatever server on the above Rock64/RP4. Any sugesstions?

Lastly lastly, could one device do all of this, or would that be too great of a strain?

Caveat: I need a GUI. Command line is too big of a pain to also figure out at the same time.

Thanks.

Upgraded #armbian on #Rock64, big mistake, now #HDMI just flickers and it's totally unusable. Seems there is a random patch, to u-boot (?) that should fix it but the build system is so cumbersume I have no idea how I'm supposed to rebuild just #uboot

To run dump1090 ADS-B tool on my #pine64 #rock64 device I gave #FreeBSD14 a try. I had good results with FreeBSD's better support for RTL-SDR USB devices. It involved creating a custom stable/14 kernel to boot from eMMC. Here are my notes:

Found our the hard way that the #Bionic legacy #Armbian works with the #RockPro64 (the Armbian 23.8 Bookworm Cinnamon Desktop would not even let the SBC power up). But the legacy kernel allows hardware acceleration in the X system and very smooth video experience. I am wondering if I should downgrade the Armbian in my #Rock64, because the GPU does not fire up when using X.
