Siamo alla quarta uscita di alto livello dall’amministrazione nei primi cinque mesi del 2026. Con un consenso in picchiata per effetto della guerra in Iran e le conseguenze interne della crisi energetica globale, Donald Trump sceglie di “serrare i ranghi” e cacciare chiunque esprima anche il minimo dissenso alla linea dettata dalla Casa Bianca.
Va letta in questo senso la scelta di Marty Makary, il capo della Food and Drug Administration (FDA), l’ente regolatore dei prodotti alimentari e farmaceutici negli Stati Uniti, di rassegnare le proprie dimissioni martedì.
Il passo indietro arriva infatti dopo settimane di voci e pressioni da parte della Casa Bianca, con i retroscena che parlavano apertamente di un Trump pronto a licenziare Makary, sostituito momentaneamente da Kyle Diamantas, il massimo responsabile della regolazione alimentare dell’organizzazione, in attesa di una nuova nomina a Washington.
Ex chirurgo oncologico, nominato a capo della FDA da Trump nell’aprile del 2025 su consiglio del segretario alla Salute Robert Kennedy Jr., noto per la promozione di teorie antiscientifiche e per l’ostilità ai vaccini, Makary ha tenuto in questi 12 mesi posizioni che hanno di fatto scontentato tutti, sia Trump che il mondo scientifico che ha sempre visto con grande preoccupazione l’arrivo alla Casa Bianca del presidente e dei suoi.
Da capo della FDA ha tenuto posizioni simili a quelli di Kennedy sui vaccini, sposando la sua battaglia sull’utilizzo di peptidi non testati. La sua Food and Drug Administration ha poi consentito la commercializzazione delle sigarette elettroniche aromatizzate alla frutta, misura fortemente voluta da Trump e a cui Makary si era inizialmente opposto per il timore che prodotti simili potessero avvicinare i più giovani alle dipendenze, salvo poi fare marcia indietro e dare il proprio assenso. With plummeting approval due to the war in Iran and the domestic consequences of the global energy crisis, Donald Trump chooses to “tighten ranks” and oust anyone who expresses even the slightest dissent from the line dictated by the White House.

This should be read in this context as the choice of Marty Makary, head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the regulatory agency for food and pharmaceutical products in the United States, to resign on Tuesday.

This step back comes after weeks of rumors and pressure from the White House, with behind-the-scenes accounts openly speaking of a Trump ready to fire Makary, who is temporarily replaced by Kyle Diamantas, the organization’s top food regulator, pending a new appointment in Washington.

A former oncological surgeon, appointed head of the FDA by Trump in April 2025 at the recommendation of Secretary of Health Robert Kennedy Jr., known for promoting anti-scientific theories and hostility to vaccines, Makary has held positions in these 12 months that have effectively dissatisfied everyone, both Trump and the scientific world which has always seen with great concern the arrival of the president and his at the White House.

As head of the FDA, he held positions similar to those of Kennedy on vaccines, adopting his battle over the use of untested peptides. His Food and Drug Administration then allowed the marketing of flavored electronic cigarettes, a measure strongly desired by Trump and which Makary had initially opposed for fear that similar products could bring younger people closer to addiction, only to backtrack and give his approval. Finally, during his tenure, he clashed with anti-abortion movements, particularly close to the White House, for slowing down a study on mifepristone, a drug widely used for abortions that the movement wants to ban.
