In Ireland, these crimes are repeatedly treated as offences under road traffic legislation, and not - despite the extreme violence, serious injuries, trauma, and death inflicted - offences against the person, such as manslaughter.
There are specific policy reasons for this, shaped by the car culture in this country.
Defensive driving means expecting others to make mistakes — because they will. Leave extra following distance, check mirrors constantly, and never assume the other driver sees you.
