Day 9 of #almost70degreesnorth and #roadtomidnightsunmarathon #race day

Well, splendid weather and thankfully those wet and windy forecast were totally wrong. Against all running bibles, I went for small hike some seven hours before the HM start. Those views from #Kvaløya over #Tromsøya to #Tromsdalstinden brought so many memories back.
I saw no reason to head to the start area early and just took a bus that fitted. Despite the sunny weather it was not really warm. Single digits Celsius. Therefore I just took some photos of a buddy who did the marathon and returned to the warm ferry terminal, which I left less than ten minutes before the start.
There were no dedicated starting groups, which is strange for a run of this size. Also some narrow passages and influencers doing videos at the beginning were not ideal. I had a plan and ran accordingly to it. Took the climb over the bridge easy and ran just around 5:50 pace on the mainland. Things continued to go well also after crossing the bridge a second time. But near the southern tip of Tromsøya I started feeling losing energy. In addition I totally misjudged where the turning point is and for one kilometre my pace plummeted to well over 6:00. The PB I hoped for was in real danger. Thankfully I was able to join a well paced grupetto which carried me towards the turning point that allowed me to recover. When we paced the southern tip a second time I was quite sure to reach a new PB with 3 kilometres to go. Against my nature I created a new goal, which was to finish below 2'05 (old PB was 2'06'16), so I needed to accelerate a bit more. In the process I also passed some runners which had been ahead me all the time. The flame rouge came and I knew I had to battle for that 2'05. I felt there was something going on behind me, but didn't realise that I was sprinting against the fastest female of the marathon. I ended up in goal one second ahead of her - sorry if you are reading this. I had no idea what was going on. So that new PB is below 2'05 now.
Sadly food and drinks in goal were minimal, and I think it's mean you have to pay extra for more food and drinks there, considering the high registration fee.
Despite the PB I never got the runners high and I was freezing like hell. So I just collected my clothes and returned to the hotel asap.
Of course the #msm takes places in a great environment and offers wonderful views, but the race itself was quite average. Rather little value for money and several organisation blunders. So I wouldn't fly there to take part - only if I was in town anyway. I also heard that there are much better organised events in other Norwegian cities.
Day 8 of #almost70degreesnorth and #roadtomidnightsunmarathon the day before

Pickup of the worst starter kit ever. Everything had to pay extra even if the registration fee way quite high. Other countries other race philosophies?
Anyway some final warmup in the lovely Valhall stadium and a shakeup run with TUIL running group.
Evening was a big highlight as I saw my favourite football team for the first time in 24 years live. During the match there was a rare contact with a Norwegian who talked a lot about the changes the city suffered in recent years.
Oh and the midnightsun was there, too.
#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 73 - #parkrun in #Hamburg ended with a season best over 5k, slightly below 26 minutes. Only the seventh time I managed to achieve that feat. Very nice route along the river (?) and comfortable due to strong winds. Otherwise it would have been quite warm.
Now a running break until Tuesday, where an easy one hour run after a 24+ hour train ride is planned.

#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 72 - last hard unit before Norway. 3 x 12 mins in 10 k pace and 3 x 6 in HM pace. Did quite well and bested my result from last week by 300 metres.
That milky sky is due to the forest fires in Canada btw.

#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 71 - the hardest unit of the training was a big success and ended with a new 15k PB two minutes under the old one. This came very unexpected as I was mostly on battling the elements. So the main goal was actually to prepare for potentially bad weather in Norway. So a full success. Hopefully I can preserved the form and have a great time in Tromsø in 13 days.

#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 70 - I totally unexpectedly ran a kind of PB over 10 k tonight. Not official as I changed clothing after the first round, but if you remove those 45 to 60 seconds. The 53:17 turns into a 52:30 something, which is better than the standing 52:46 mark.
Never ever thought I'm at the form needed for such a time right now.

#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 69 - so today I did those hard 80 minutes during lunchbreak. Those final hard units are also designed for increase willpower, something that might help if weather in the North is going to be bad. Now only two hard units left before heading for my first train in eight days.

#running #laufen
#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 68 - after 20 minutes I knew that I won't finish the 80 hard minutes as planned and opted for 30 instead. Because of this I might skip #parkrun on Saturday.

#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 67 - after a very dry spring, it's kind of hard to find a dry spot these days. But was quite lucky late yesterday evening and gave those pace variation intervals another try. They went much better than on Friday. Sadly, both heels are very sore after each run and a visit to the doctor after holiday is unavoidable.

#running #laufen
#roadtomidnightsunmarathon unit 66 - the easiest of the hard units didn't go well and I abandoned it after the second fast ten minute intervall. As it might be too warm for cycling tomorrow, perhaps I give it another try ten seconds slower?
