We came home via #hebdenbridge where #RiotWomen was filmed - it started cold & cloudy but then the sun came out ( all through the long drive home)

I just finished Riot Women and it was about perfect! Five menopausal women form a punk band and write angry songs about their lives. Sally Wainwright's scripts are tragic and hilarious, the acting is excellent. There's nothing about this show I didn't love. And it passes the Bechdel test with flying colors.

One big problem with TV shows (and probably movies, but I don't watch many) about fictional musicians that rely on original music is that the music sucks. I liked Nashville a lot as a soap opera but it's musically blah with one or two exceptions and they're mostly that way. This show is an exception. The songs probably aren't going to make the hit parade IRL but they're totally listenable.

Here's one of the songs -- Violet -- sung by the great Rosalie Craig -- Watch it!

I love this #TV show so much it’s STUPID. For all the #women who’ve ever been underestimated, subjugated, or used but still have fight left in them, #RiotWomen is for you. It’s hilarious & unflinching, the lead singer’s voice is electric & whoever wrote the #punk band’s songs is a friggin’ genius. I guarantee you this is the 1st time people all over the world are belting out a song about #menopause.

Trust me…watch it, & you will, too🎸

Looking forward to more!! 🫶

Watching a show called Riot Women about women in their 50s and 60s starting a rock band. Didn't expect to like it but it both makes me laugh again and again and hits home again and again.

"And you thought the Clash were angry!"

I see that Riot Women is starting on TVNZ 1 from Tuesday. I can thoroughly recommend this six-part drama from Sally Wainwright (of Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax fame). It's the story, set in pure Wainwright territory of Yorkshire, of a group of women dealing with elder care issues, selfish children, and menopause. They form a punk rock band to star in a local talent show. It's about how they want to be heard and seen and fight for a sense of who they are. Profoundly feminist, it shows how through their friendship, they bond to help each other deal with their lives, including men and their fragile egos - as well as, in some cases, the violence towards them. Superbly acted, it is well worth watching. Definitely 5 stars.

With Riot Women, Sally Wainwright is turning menopause into punk rebellion

By placing menopause at the centre of a punk-inflected drama, Wainwright opens a new televisual space for midlife women.
