The US government is suing Uber Technologies for discriminating against passengers with disabilities, according to CNN.

“The US Department of Justice said Uber drivers routinely refuse to serve people with disabilities, including riders who travel with service animals or stowable wheelchairs.”

We protested rideshare discrimination against blind people using guide dogs or white canes, in San Francisco. We continue to stand for our #RightToRide.

Had an instance where I was denied an Uber ride because of my white cane. Lyft too! I eventually had to use UZURV to get me home. For those not in the know, UZURV is an on demand ride share specifically designed for Disabled people and my city covers the costs of these rides via the Paratransit partnerships with UZURV. I had booked a ride to go from the library to my home. Each time, on each service, the driver pulled up just enough to see me, see my cane, then pull away. Both apps said my trips were canceled. I logged the incident and complained to both Uber and Lyft. I got ride credits from Lyft, which tells me they are well aware this is happening and have some internal mechanism to deal with things like this, which tells me they aren't doing enough. They are doing enough just to make the problem go away. Radio silence from Uber. Not every state has a Paratransit partnership with UZURV and I don't know about other countries, but I think UZURV is a United States only thing. These tech companies need to be held accountable. This has got to end, and not with just giving a user Lyft credits and told to essentially go away. #Uber #Lyft #RightToRide

“I don’t know what you’ve been told, ride denials are getting old. Listen to the NFB. My guide dog will ride with me,” our Federation family chanted during our Rideshare Rally. Two weeks ago today, we protested rideshare discrimination against blind people using guide dogs and white canes.

“The more that they (drivers) understand the true impact that this has on blind people, the more that they can be advocates with other drivers and with the company that they should do more,” said President Riccobono.
