My cute little vampires.

The prolific yellow flowers are yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor), a semi-parasitic plant that feeds primarily on grasses.

That there are so many of them this spring is cool and a little creepy.

I'm glad I'm not a grass in my front yard.

Yellow rattle (Rhinanthus minor), a semiparasitic annual that feeds on grasses, has spread all across the front yard #meadow ( #BeeLawn ).

I'm impressed. In spots it has colonized -- see photo. It will bloom next month.

Mitte Juni, das heißt Zeit für die jährliche Mahd auf unseren Flächen 🌾

Um weiteren Nährstoffeintrag durch die abgemähten Pflanzen zu vermeiden (#Aushagerung), folgte darauf wie in jedem Jahr unser Arbeitseinsatz zum Rechen der #Bunten #Wiesen im #Goethepark, am #Spionskopf und am #Campus - nicht nur eine schweißtreibende Arbeit, an der abschüssigen Fläche am Campus auch eine kleine Rutschpartie 😁🏄

Unter dem Mahdgut fand sich zudem ein Zottiger #Klappertopf (#Rhinanthus alectorolophus), der bereits zur Samenreife gekommen war (siehe letzte Slide)

Wir haben die Pflanze im vergangenen Sommer auf einigen Bunten Wiesen ausgesät und hoffen nun, dass sie sich ansiedelt - als Halbschmarotzer zapft der Klappertopf Gräser an und drängt sie zurück, was mehr Raum für andere Arten schafft.
