Netflix Tudum

51/50

I watched REZ BALL. It was very sweet. It's a small film, but does a lot with what it's got. It's also a somewhat straightforward sports film, but having a predominantly native cast gives it a resonance that is touching and meaningful. Well worth a watch.

5 #movies 1 #TV recs:
#DarkWaters: Fuck #Dupont (how are they still around?)

#RezBall: #SterlinHarjo's basketball flic hits all the baskets

#OnlyTheAnimals: wild plot twisty French mystery

#RebelRidge: Corrupt cop Don Johnson getting his ass kicked by insanely charismatic Aaron Pierre

#BonesAndAll: Cannibal romance? yes please.

#RingsOfPower: 1st season did a lot of setting up, 2nd season slammed dunked them

I'm not into team sports, but I really enjoyed watching the film Rez Ball on its #Netflix debut on Friday. Like the show Friday Night Lights, the characters drew me in. #settlers who want to support Indigenous creators, check it out! (Ideally sooner rather than later, to help the netflix algorithm in the direction of supporting more Indigenous-created art.) Directed by Sydney Freeland (Navajo).

(Content warning for a tragic plot point, which I won't specify so as to avoid spoilers, but it won't be news to anyone who knows anything about rez realities and youth. And the film overall made me happy. I thought Freeland's composition and balancing of moods and emotional tones was superb.)

Thursday, September 26, 2024 – The triumph and tragedy of ‘Rez Ball’ » Native America Calling

With help from Lakers’ superstar Lebron James, a Native director and cast tell the story of trauma and healing playing out within a reservation small town high school basketball team. Sydney Freeland (Navajo) is a gifted storyteller (Echo, Reservation Dogs, Drunktown’s Finest), teaming up with Sterlin Harjo (Seminole/Muscogee) to tell the sometimes heartbreaking, always human drama of the fictional Chuska Warriors. It’s sure to resonate with current and past rez ball warriors and adds to the growing list of films that show the world what can be achieved when Native talent delivers Native stories.
