Stone oaks, centuries-old trees that have evolved to endure drought and poor soils, yet climate change is now overwhelming their adaptations. Water stress, pathogens, and fire are increasing mortality, threatening these protected trees and the biodiversity they shelter. In a rapidly changing climate, centuries of adaptation are no longer enough.
Each germinated seed in this image is part of our rewilding effort, a careful attempt to support a species at risk. The success rate is low, but we keep planting, nurturing, and trying.

European Rewilding Network | Rewilding Intro | Quinta do Pisão
This time our ERN member, Quinta do Pisão, is taking us on a 30-minute long journey to Portugal, more specifically to the north of Cascais in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, part of the Natura 2000 network nearby Lisbon metropolitan area. João Cardoso de Melo is the Ecological Infrastructure Management Director at Ambiente Cascais municipal company and head of the Quinta do Pisão Nature Park. You will get the opportunity to hear how João and his team are working to create a living landscape where nature and human activities interact in harmony, promoting and providing services for both the community and visitors. In addition, you will get a chance to learn about the initiative's future plans and discover how rewilding doesn’t have to be only in remote areas but can actually bring wildlife to your door as João explains it.
