> ☂️ International Whores Day - 2nd June ☂️
> It started with a protest...
> In 1975, over 100 sex workers and allies began an 8-day occupation at the Saint-Nizier Church in Lyon, France. The demonstration was in response to fines, stigma and police harassment; including the imprisonment of ten sex workers just days prior.
> The action was widely reported on and, despite the protestors eventual removal by police, made a profound impact.
> June 2nd has since become recognised as the beginning of the modern sex worker rights movement. Every year, International Whores Day is celebrated with protests and events across the world.
➕
> Inspired by this action [2nd June, 1975] and in reclaiming derogatory terms of that period “whore” against women as sex workers, sex workers all over the world started organizing, giving rise to the modern-day sex workers rights movement.
> "Whore" is a term that sex workers have reclaimed diligently and no longer is the term a slur [when used amongst the community].
> International Whores Day for sex workers is a day of pride.
