Republican President General Dwight David "Ike" #Eisenhower planned the World War II invasion of France in 1944, which cost a lot of lives but was major and successful step in ending a war begun by a lunatic autocrat.
Eisenhower accepted responsibility for this invasion, whichever way it went. He drafted a speech to deliver if the invasion failed: "The troops, the air and the Navy did all that bravery and devotion to duty could do. If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt, it is mine alone." A responsible president.
When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, democrat Lyndon B. Johnson reached across the aisle, and Eisenhower came to his aid: On a visit to the Oval Office, Ike wrote out what he thought LBJ should tell an emergency session of Congress. A helpful president.
That was the kind of man that the #Republican Party used to admire and elect.
