I feel #ImposterSyndrome both ways - I know a lot about practical computer science and plant pathology, but have knowledge gaps & no formal training in either 💻🧬🦠

#BritishGeologicalSurvey swapped from ESRI to #QGIS for field data capture last year. With in-house developers, we could write a Python plugin to do exactly what we want and the licence allows us to share with whomever we want. ArcGIS Field Maps were too simplistic and locked-in. #ResearchSoftwareEngineer movement means Universities increasingly have developers, too. 1/n

Perfect day for learning how to work with responsible disclosures, how Git platforms support them, how to define the relevant CWEs and how to judge the severity of the reported vulnerability. Saved me from hanging bling onto a dead plant. Learned much, and believe that every #ResearchSoftwareEngineer should get the opportunity to learn how to do these things. Ideally before they have to do them.

I have updated a draft of the RCP Internship Discovery Program Welcome slides for Summer 2025/2026.

It is more aligned with the fact that our most successful interns are organised, communicate well and ask lots of questions.

I also tried to fit in how university projects are not as complex as standard workplace projects, and our projects are even more complex than that.
