William Stoner, Sohn armer Farmer aus Missouri, entdeckt an der Universität die Literatur und schlägt daraufhin einen anderen Weg ein als den für ihn vorgesehenen. Er wird Dozent, heiratet unglücklich, erlebt berufliche Konflikte und findet nur selten Momente wirklichen Glücks. Eine äußerlich recht unspektakuläre Geschichte, die jedoch in ihrer Einfachheit tief geht.

John Williams schreibt klar und in einem unspektakulären Ton, der genau zu dem erzählten Stoff passt.

Stoner ist ein Roman über verpasste Chancen, Würde und die stille Tragweite eines gewöhnlichen Lebens.
