A 31-year-old Georgia woman has charged with murder by police who say she took pills to induce an abortion. Alexia Moore has been jailed in Camden County since March 4. An arrest warrant obtained by a police investigator says Moore arrived at a hospital Dec. 30 complaining of abdominal pain and told medical staff she had taken a drug used in medical abortions. The warrant says the fetus survived about an hour after being delivered. A 2019 Georgia law 2019 bans abortion after embryonic cardiac activity can be detected, typically about six weeks into a pregnancy. The Georgia Public Defender Council, which is representing Moore, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
"Mary Ziegler, a professor at the University of California-Davis School of Law, said the proposed legislation would insulate crisis pregnancy centers from having to meet the standards that medical organizations face. It would blur the line between advocacy and medical practice, she said. And such legislation provides Republicans with a potentially useful campaign message ahead of midterm elections."
Some states have tried to crack down on crisis pregnancy centers, accusing them of deceptive practices. But now conservative lawmakers are pushing legislation to increase protections for the organizations, which work to dissuade women from abortions.
"U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has detained and deported hundreds of pregnant, postpartum and nursing immigrants since the start of the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed for the first time Wednesday. Federal policy says that such individuals should only be detained in limited circumstances."
