Zines

I’ve started making zines. It’s Monica Louzon‘s fault; she ran a minizine workshop during Flights of Foundry.

I am in a baseline state of despair about all the ways the internet is falling apart, with (private) basic infrastructure enshittifying at an astounding rate. (Remember when Google had a good search engine? Remember when websites were weird, handmade, or at least human-made? Remember the era before AI slop? The era before SEO crap?) Doing a bit of arts-and-crafts seemed like a good antidote to that.

And it was! Even though my brain kind of processes folding as complicated sorcery. Even though I didn’t have any zine-y ideas for a zine, I sketched something out. And you know what? I’ve got a lot of micro, flash, and short stories that can get repurposed into minizines or chapbooks.

“Attack of the Crab Monsters, dir. Roger Corman” is my first minizine. I went to Philly Zine Fest and threw a few copies into freebie boxes and a couple zine libraries. (I’m planning on taking online orders and such, too, I just haven’t been arsed to set anything up yet.) At almost fifty, with a longtime creative focus on digital outlets, I’m poking around the edges of zine culture. This is, undoubtedly, largely distraction from Everything™…but it’s not the unhealthiest distraction.

Paper lasts. That’s a lesson from archives. It’s sort of funny, since zines are typically considered ephemera. But the crappiest contemporary copy paper is going to hold up way better than mid-20th century office papers. You don’t have to migrate a sheet of paper, and you don’t need an electronic device to read it. Discoverability is…well, discoverability is already a casualty of enshittification. Might as well have folded sheets of paper sitting in various boxes in different places, as well as digital files sitting on various servers, downloadable from various sites.

From the moment I preordered this #reprint of #tmnt4 I never thought I would ever get an actual #firstprint of #teenagemutantninjaturtles issue 4. On the plus side, the #reprint is autographed by Michael Dooney, so that’s awesome.
