Biserica Ortodoxă Română: Romanian Orthodox Church launches digital archive of over 60,000 cultural artifacts. “The Romanian Patriarchate has launched a major project to digitise the cultural heritage of the Romanian Orthodox Church. These #Roman #dodecahedrons, made of a copper alloy, dating to the 3rd century CE, are pretty interesting. Apparently, nobody knows what they're for, and more than 100 have been discovered in various Roman sites. While not standardized, they're all roughly the size of a grapefruit. #Archeologists suspect they're #religiousArtifacts given the prevalence of superstition, but I think they're used to play a game. Something like #bocce, maybe. What do you think?

Do you know any art or religious historians who can tell me anything about this icon from the late 19th or early 20th century? My dad retrieved it and a couple of others from the Carpathian village where he was born.

The painting may be done on the back of the glass (or maybe it’s a watercolor on paper) with gilding, and the frame is hand-hewn from rough wood.
