my header image is a rocky san francisco beach and i was thinking recently about changing it. but then today i looked again at it and remembered everything about it. color is central to its meaning. all the colors, the sense of color, what we mean when we think about the concept of color. there is a rainbow fabric wing suspending a recreationalist beneath it on the wind that will never leave that beach. the photo was developed to bring out the color i saw standing on my perch from above, among the birds that owned that place more than did the discarded remnants of stone left by the same industrialists that never stopped trying to wreck my land. central to the image is the brightly colored fabric wing, but the hills around it are, too. i kept the wing looking good while amplifying the reds, greens, and yellow of the sand because when i stood there holding a camera, a few steps from my car and bundled against the frigid breath of the planet's ocean, i saw the people, the infrastructure of the planet's city, the scene of a community and what it's built after tens of thousands of years and standing there after some time i noticed the hillside's growth.
