Regenerative Leadership & The Future

Over the past several decades, leadership has been more of a big self help section type of topic. It still is, but in the 90s there were all of the books about corporate leadership by the CEO of Ford, Toyota, and other large (often cars, such as Lee Iacocca) corporations. We also got a little bit of athletes such as Michael Jordan sharing the concept of trying hard means you will be a bazillionaire and the classic 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. In America we always seem to think we are just a few lucky breaks and entitled decisions away from greatness, from being a multimillionaire (aka as a billionaire these days, as having a million doesn’t get you through 30 years of retirement or a single medical emergency these days). Leadership books were all from men, as women were rarely in leadership roles if there was a lot of money involved. The 90s talked a lot about the glass ceiling and that was really about white women, not including the underrepresentation of women of color. The 00s started hitting the software/tech industry window, when people started talking about Balanced Scorecards, and books like How to Win Friends and Influence People were big - all about that mythical charisma leaders naturally have to convince people to let them invest billions or manipulate the real estate market. The tech field also got us into Six Sigma and IT technology leadership. We also see a lot about the Enneagrams, Emotional Intelligence, and how to find your leadership style. We also saw a lot of books by football coaches and from personalities like Bear Grylls - with that age-old myth that if you just work extra hard you will be rich and famous.
