Curious what fellow Portland people feel/think about Reed college?

And if anyone knows how communicative teachers and staff are?

Went through hell at PCC and going through a similar one at PSU. Can’t seem to get anything done when it comes to accommodations at these two places.

I know Reed is more expensive… but that no-tuition under $100k income is calling to me. That and the communal vibes I'm getting from the public facing media & stuff.

OK, why does my Reed College alumni magazine always smell like rancid nuts? #publishing #printing #magazine #chemical #paper #reed #reedcollege #rancid #nuts #portland #oregon
This week I led two #jazz slow jam sessions for beginners at #ReedCollege as part of the college's community learning week called Paideia. A #SlowJam is just that, playing very slowly so that people who are new to a jam or to the tunes can get started. The first goal is listening to each other so that we can play *together*. The students were enthusiastic and successful. And my co-leader and I had an absolute blast.

I am foolishly considering giving a couple of talks on the basics of patent practice at my undergraduate alma mater.

Today was the memorial for Joe Roberts who taught mathematics at #ReedCollege for 62 years. Joe died last month, 9 days short of his 100th birthday. I took first semester freshman math (algebraic basis for the real numbers) from Joe and decided to be a math major. Joe was also the first person to teach me how to juggle.

The memorial was very nice with family and friends reading poems that Joe loved and poems that Joe wrote, interspersed with a few details of his life well lived.

To me, the signature American poets are, as the article has it, Whitman and Stevens, and to them I would add Dickinson.

Having spent a fair amount of time contemplating the #poems and #poetry of Stevens, this was very enjoyable read.

I remember sitting in an #English #literature class four decades ago at #ReedCollege and saying... "his poetry is very nice, but let's talk about the fact that he spent his life as an insurance executive."

The #professor was happy to entertain that question, and it still provides a productive #meditation today.
