Saw the #ThickTrunkTuesdays, #ThickTrunkTuesday, #TreeTrunkTuesdays & #TreeTrunkTuesday tag in my feed and found the exact right moment to post this photo (which is somehow 20 years old) of young Jack with my arborist turned accountant father standing on a redwood stump when we lived in California. And the next job he had after this took us from California to Michigan was a nonprofit nursery devoted to repopulating the earth with redwoods!

Stout Grove

Stout Memorial Grove is a beautiful stand of redwoods in Northern California. The trail through the grove is short and sweet with access to the Smith River. We sat on the river bank and listened to the wind blow through the trees as the river ran lazy in the early fall.
I captured this image on the way back from the river.

Mariposa Grove

Just inside the south gate of Yosemite by roughly 1/2 mile you find the parking lot to this magnificent grove of redwoods. From the parking lot there are a number hiking trails that one can take that are easy to moderate hikes.
I had this whole grove mostly to myself. I had time to shoot undisturbed and completely enjoyed the experience.

“Poison Oak” — Poison oak leaves transition to fall colors in the deep shade of a redwood forest.

Aspens are not the only plants producing fall color here in California. The ubiquitous poison oak plants become even more red and start to pick up a bit of yellow/brown late in the season. The plant is widespread in wild areas of the state, ranging from coastal bluffs to oak forests to scrub brush, and California hikers soon learn how to identify it. The red leaves are a clue, but the oak shaped leaves in groups of three can mostly confirm it. "Corythosaurus casuarius" — 2012

Corythosaurus casuarius was a duckbilled dinosaur, from the Late Cretaceous of North America. This a a completely reworked version of the first painting I ever did, back in 1995 or so. It owes quite a lot to a drawing of Parasaurlophus in a redwood forest by Gregory Paul.
