The move is aimed at forcing users to adopt the official app instead of third-party apps. Centralised platforms have all-powerful leaders who can do whatever they want, and you have no alternatives if you disagree. I want to add this particular bit of fuckery by the #Reddit mods at r/WayOfTheBern, a subreddit that claims to be about promoting Bernie Sanders and his politics, but instead just promotes #MAGA and all things Pro-Trump. Here's an example:

Their mechanism of control is to remove all dissent, enforce the #SocialMedia bubble, and then funnel potential recruits to ever more radical subreddits. It's a mix of PsyOp and marketing tactics.
