Pied avocet -- Recurvirostra avosetta

Although I have never seen a pied avocet in real life, I look at pictures and am struck by the pleasing contrast of the black and white in its plumage and the elegant curvature of its beak.

I visited Black Hole Marsh, #Seaton early this morning to check out the first breeding #Devon #Avocet. It was peaceful and quiet and the Avocet were all present and correct - two adult, three young. Lovely to see this elegant wader. And they also lived up to their feisty reputation as parents - seeing off any birds that came too close
